Advice on Changing Careers

By February 20, 2019No Comments

Dear Diane,

After ignoring my gut instinct for several years, I think I’m finally ready to pursue a new career. If I go ahead with the change, I’ll be leaving the world of pharmaceutical sales to earn my esthetician’s license. My goal is to open my own skincare studio. I’ve recently completed my M.B.A. and have built up a solid network of professionals in my area who would benefit from my services. How do I truly know when the time is right to take the entrepreneurial leap?

Sincerely,

Claire W.

Dear Claire,

It sounds like your intuition (and perhaps your health) is signaling it is time for a change. I’ll address the “gut” instinct first but be sure to keep reading for important areas to consider on the education, business and personal relationships side, as well.

How to change careers

Tummy Issues

Stress often surfaces through gastrointestinal problems. According to an article in Everyday Health, our gut and brain are in constant communication and can affect every part of the digestive system. When your body is stressed, it can cause a myriad of symptoms to let you know you need to evaluate your health, eating habits and lifestyle.

If your well-being is at risk, it is a strong indicator the time may be right to move on from your current job.

Additional signs of stress may include:

  • Headaches and muscle tension
  • High blood pressure or heart issues
  • Loss of sleep or changes in weight
  • Recurring infections or colds
  • Irritability (with family or clients)
  • Lethargy or boredom
  • You can’t get out of bed or you dread walking into the office
  • You call in sick often

Education

Depending on the path you choose to pursue, additional education may be in order. You mentioned you’ve recently earned your M.B.A., which is excellent and will surely be an asset. Though an M.B.A. may not always be required, your credibility will be enhanced with the extra amount of training. In your situation, an esthetician’s license will be a necessary next step. I’m sure you’ll make good connections and benefit from the hands-on training.

Business Plan

A strategic business plan that’s been given the stamp of approval from a business mentor, professor or career coach is essential. Don’t shortchange your long-term success by glossing over crucial elements. You’ll be covering your financial bases in your business plan. Don’t shy away from a side gig if it’s a practical necessity for now (but be careful not to burn yourself out).

Relationships

Having a support system in your corner will be a tremendous blessing. There are so many exciting steps when opening a place of business. Being able to lean on a partner or friend will help you remember your “why” after an especially hectic or stressful day. Celebrating wins is so much sweeter when you have good friends and loved ones by your side. Just as important, giving your employer adequate notice of your departure and leaving on good terms is always a wise idea. Your former colleagues may end up being the biggest advocates in your next chapter.

Starting a new business can be a challenge, but with hard work and determination, you may be on your way to your next big success.

Good luck,
Diane
