Dear Diane,
Like many others, I’m enthralled with the Netflix series Tidying Up with Marie Kondo. I’d like to channel my inspiration into a worthwhile project, converting our spare bedroom into a home office. I work from home 2-3 days a week and find myself working from the kitchen island or couch, often distracted. Any tips on how to get started?
Sincerely,
Alyssa T.
Dear Alyssa,
Pulling together a beautiful home office is a wonderful endeavor. You’ll enjoy the benefits of the new space right away and may even see a nice boost in your productivity. In the process, you’ll also get more organized and gather items to toss and donate.
Below you’ll find a list of must-haves as well a few nice extras. Of course, work within your budget and at your pace. Part of the fun is spotting the perfect item at the perfect price and that takes time.
Home Office Necessities:
Functional and Stylish Desk
Since it’s where you’ll be spending most of your time, the right desk is essential. You’ll want enough room for a second monitor and printer if possible. There are so many styles and price points in stores and online. You could even dress up a consignment store find if you’re going for more of a distressed look.
Comfortable Desk Chair
Don’t settle when it comes to seating. Your back will thank you for the extra love and comfort a quality chair provides.
Lighting
The lighting helps to set the mood for the room. Opt for overhead and desk lighting so that you can adjust as needed.
Drapes/Curtains
Speaking of lighting, research shows us that natural light is important. Let the light in and add curtains for a stylish and practical touch.
Artwork and Bulletin Board
Your personal taste can shine in the artwork you choose. Colorful and modern, soft and feminine, black and white and everything in between. Whatever you select, opt for quality framing and install with care. Balance and proportion are key. A bulletin board is a dedicated area to pin thank you notes, invitations and whatever makes you smile.
Desk Accessories and Essentials
Have fun with desk accessories – Target and TJMaxx carry lots of options. You’ll want quality pens and paper, a stapler and tape dispenser, storage solutions for filing and a desk calendar or planner. A printer, wastebasket, recycling bin and paper shredder may also be on your list.
Stationery and Postage
Stock your desk with stationery and stamps for business thank you notes. Never underestimate the importance of sending a timely and thoughtful thank you note.
Optional but nice:
As you customize your home office, you may have room in the budget to add a few more “extras” to add even more comfort and style.
- Cozy Rug
- Second area for seating
- Candles and/or essential oil diffuser
- Charging station for devices
- Plants
- Shelving
- Standing desk
I am certain the rewards of this makeover will ‘spark’ additional home projects. Keep me posted!
Good luck,
Diane
