Office Happy Hour Etiquette

By December 2, 2015February 21st, 2022No Comments

Dear Diane,
I am a part of a collaborative co-working space that has many perks. For instance, every Friday our community director coordinates a happy hour with light hors d’oeuvres and music. As a non-drinker, I often shy away from attending as I fear I will potentially make others feel uncomfortable. However, by not being a part of the festivities, I feel like I may also be missing out on the fun and camaraderie.  How do you recommend I stay true to myself while making an appearance at the next gathering?
Morgan A.

Dear Morgan,

You are correct. The monthly happy hour is a prime opportunity to get to know your colleagues and express appreciation for being included in the after-work social event. Whether you order a non-alcoholic drink, a tonic spritzer or a diet soda with a slice of lime, remember to engage with those around you. Do your best to feel at ease. Your awkwardness is self-inflicted. Office happy hour etiquette does not dictate that you drink.

Let the event coordinator know your previous concern and assure them that you will be attending the next event. Make every effort to participate. Chat about hobbies and other shared interests. By keeping the conversation rolling, others will not even notice you are skipping the liquor. Have a great time and enjoy yourself.
Good luck,

Diane
