Making a Career Change

By October 29, 2015No Comments

Dear Diane,

After a brief hiatus, I’m eager to jump back into a career in the tourism industry, but on a slightly different track. I am caring for an elderly parent and have been applying for part-time front desk positions instead of the more familiar management roles. What is your professional opinion on how I should respond to the common interview question: “Why do you think you are the right candidate for this position?” I’m afraid I may be seen as overqualified, and want to emphasize how much I enjoy working in the industry and look forward to a different set of professional obligations.

Making a Career Change

Dear Denise,

Returning to a field you love will certainly provide a change of pace and an opportunity to learn different skills. I agree that it would be advantageous to briefly explain your reasoning for the interest in a modification of responsibility. There is no need to get into specifics about your parent’s health. However, you could say something along the lines of: “Although my experience in the past has been in management, my current situation entails a different type of flexibility.”

As you continue your conversation, highlight the attributes that would benefit the organization, making you the ideal candidate. Try, “I am confident I would excel in this position. Throughout my career, I have found I most enjoyed working directly with the public, delivering excellent service. My experience gives me a unique perspective on how important this role is to the customer’s overall satisfaction. I would consider it a privilege to serve on your team”.

Good luck,
Diane
