Dear Diane,
Every year my friends and I plan at least one big trip and a few smaller outings together since we’re spread around the US and love staying in touch. Last week a friend in our circle unexpectedly was able to score incredible seats to the Kentucky Derby. Though I’d love to join, I haven’t quite budgeted for the short notice airfare, lodging, and food, not to mention the associated entertainment costs. How can I exempt myself without raining on their parade?
Thanks,
Tina L.
Dear Tina,
What a fun group of girlfriends, and kudos to each of you for making trips together a priority. It’s certainly understandable that your wallet may feel the weight of a last-minute girls trip. If you are temporarily short on funds, it’s in your best interest to thank them for including you, letting them know you’ll have to opt out of the weekend excursion but are looking forward to the next opportunity.
If your friends ask why you can’t go, give them a very brief version of the truth. Say something along the lines of, “It’s out of my budget for now, but I can’t wait to see all the pictures when you return.” You are wise to think responsibly and live within your means. Maybe you can invite another group of friends over and have your own Kentucky Derby Party in honor of the real event. Wear a colorful hat, make a mint julep, or a Grey Goose Oaks Lily cocktail!
Have a great weekend,
Diane
