Dear Diane,
Today is Cyber Monday, the first day back after an extended Thanksgiving break. I can’t help but notice several of my colleagues are distracted on the internet ordering their holiday gifts on company time. Do I tattle or do the same?
R.
Dear R.,
Neither. It’s pretty obvious your coworkers are distracted, and I’m sure your boss will take notice, as well. Of course, you are responsible for your job success. Obviously, it’s professional business etiquette to do what is right, not what is common, in the workplace. If you experience delays due to the distraction, express your concern to your coworker by saying, “The project is due this afternoon, and you are clearly distracted by your personal business. I’d appreciate your full attention to this deadline.” However, if it’s a major issue, and your client’s best interest is at stake, discuss it with your immediate supervisor in a calm, professional manner. State the facts and leave emotion (frustration) out of your tone of voice.
Best,
Diane
